The Small Family Roots

This photograph is of 56 Mitford Road in Holloway North London. On the 24th May 1883 a child named Emily Eliza Small was born here.

(No 56 Mitford Road was originally built as the main house on a Water Cress farm, hard to believe now as it is in a extremely built up area of Holloway).

My maternal grandmother Emily Maud Small didn't appear to have been given the name Maud at registration. The birth certificate* registered for an Emily Eliza Small, matches all that we know about Emily, her birth date, her fathers name and the location of her birth are all correct, so it appears that if this child is our grandmother, at sometime she changed her middle name to Maud.

So far Emily has eluded our efforts to locate her on the 1891 census, but we know that Emily Eliza's mother, Margaret Emma nee Fitzer had died in 1885 aged 36, when Emily was only two years old. Her father, George Small was living in lodgings at 1 Eden Grove Holloway in 1901 and her siblings were either married or in service.

George and Margaret Emma had two sons and two daughters before they had Emily.

Margaret's parents were George Fitzer and Elizabeth Graves, Elizabeth was born in Ingatestone in Essex, George in St Pancras, his occupation was Copper Plate printer. They had six children including Margaret.

During our research we have found ten addresses for George Small. He had many occupations including Costermonger, Fish Hawker and Horse Dealer.

He had four brothers and four sisters and their parents were Thomas Small and Sarah Goodin. They had married on the 30th April 1837 at St Leonards Shoreditch. Thomas was a Farrier.

This is a photograph of Sarah Goodin
Born abt 1818 died 14 August 1880
Buried at Islington cemetery in Finchley North London

This picture is of Scholefield Road Islington, the caption states that a Cats meat Purveyor lived here.

George's brother James lived at no 26 in 1901, with his wife and eight children, his occupation was given Cats meat purveyor.

Edward another brother was living here in 1902 at the time of his daughters wedding. He had ten children and was also a Cats meat purveyor.

On the 24th October 1910 George Small our Great Grandfather died and his address on the death certificate was also no 26. He had died of Pulmonary Tuberculosis.
